How to Add a Signature to a PDF for Free

Signing a PDF doesn't require Adobe Acrobat or a paid e-signature service for most everyday situations. Here's how to add a handwritten, typed, or saved signature to any PDF — free, in your browser, with your document never leaving your device.

The need to sign a PDF comes up constantly: a lease, a contractor agreement, a consent form, an internal approval. For decades this meant printing, signing with a pen, and scanning back — or paying for Adobe Acrobat or a dedicated e-signature service like DocuSign.

For most everyday signing tasks, neither is necessary. A browser-based PDF editor with signature support handles the job in under a minute, keeps your document on your device, and produces a standard PDF the recipient can open in any viewer.

Three Ways to Sign a PDF

1. Draw Your Signature

Drawing your signature freehand is the most natural option if you have a touchscreen, a graphics tablet, or you're willing to use a mouse. The result looks like an actual handwritten signature — because it is one.

The main downside of mouse drawing is that signatures tend to look less clean than on paper or a tablet. If you have a touchscreen device — a tablet, a touchscreen laptop, or a phone — drawing with a finger or stylus produces much better results.

2. Type Your Signature

Typed signatures use a handwriting-style font to render your name as something that looks like a signature. They're not as personal as a drawn signature, but they're consistent and legible — particularly useful in professional contexts where readability matters.

Most tools offer several font options so you can pick the one that best matches your actual signature style.

3. Use a Saved Signature

If you've signed a document before using DraftPDF, your saved signature can be reused. This is the fastest option for repeat use — select it, then place it on the page without redrawing or retyping.

How to Sign a PDF in DraftPDF — Step by Step

  1. Open your PDF in DraftPDF (draftpdf.com — no install needed).
  2. Click the Signature tool in the left toolbar.
  3. A panel opens with three tabs: Draw, Type, and Saved.
  4. Draw tab: use your mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen to draw your signature in the canvas. Click Clear to start over.
  5. Type tab: enter your name and select a font style that matches your preference.
  6. Saved tab: if you've previously saved signatures to your account, they appear here. Click one to select it.
  7. Click 'Place' or 'Apply,' then click on the PDF page where you want the signature to appear.
  8. Drag to reposition, or use the corner handles to resize.
  9. Save or export the PDF. The signature is embedded as an annotation in the file.

Tip

Zoom in to the signature area before placing for more precise positioning. You can always move the signature after placing by clicking on it and dragging.

Is a DraftPDF Signature Legally Binding?

This is the most important question to answer clearly: it depends on the context and jurisdiction.

Under most electronic signature laws — the US ESIGN Act, the EU eIDAS Regulation, the UK Electronic Communications Act — a signature doesn't need to be cryptographically verified to be legally valid. What matters is the intent to sign and some evidence of identity. For many everyday documents, a typed or drawn signature placed on a PDF satisfies this.

  • Generally sufficient: internal approvals, personal agreements between individuals, informal contracts, consent forms, everyday correspondence requiring sign-off
  • May require stronger verification: regulated financial contracts, employment agreements in some jurisdictions, high-value commercial contracts
  • Requires a qualified electronic signature (QES): certain EU legal proceedings, notarised documents, specific regulated industries under eIDAS

When to Use DocuSign or a Dedicated Service

If you need an audit trail — timestamps, IP addresses, identity verification, tamper-evident sealing — use a dedicated e-signature platform like DocuSign, HelloSign, or Adobe Sign. These provide legally defensible records that a simple PDF annotation signature cannot. For anything where you might need to prove in court that a specific person signed, use a proper e-signature service.

Adding Your Signature to a Form Field

Some PDFs include a visible 'Sign here' box as part of the document layout. In DraftPDF, you can place a signature annotation over that area manually and position it to fit the intended space.

Signing Multiple Pages

If a document requires initials on each page and a full signature at the end, treat them as separate signature placements. Place initials on each page using the signature tool, and your full signature on the final page. Saved signatures make this fast — select the saved initial, place it, navigate to the next page, repeat.

Does Signing Change the PDF's Other Content?

No. The signature is added as an annotation layer on top of the existing page content. The underlying document — its text, images, formatting — is not modified. Recipients can open the signed PDF in any viewer and see both the original content and your signature.

Privacy: Does DraftPDF Store Your Signature?

Saved signatures can sync with your DraftPDF account when you are signed in, while the PDF document itself still stays local to your device during editing. If you remove saved signature entries from your account, they are no longer available in the editor.

Tip

If you're signing on a shared or public computer, avoid saving signature entries to the account you are using. Use a one-off signature instead, then sign out when you're done.
